Working with electricity can be dangerous, so if you are not experienced in this area, moving a chandelier for the first time might not be the ideal time to test your skills.
Taking a Chandelier down in London?
Removing a chandelier on your own can be a heavy undertaking. It can be a good idea to enlist the help of a professional who is used to handling large light fixtures such as a chandelier. Working with electricity can be dangerous, so if you are not experienced in this area, moving a chandelier for the first time might not be the ideal time to test your skills. In addition, chandeliers can be large and delicate, so hiring a professional can help ensure your light is handled with care and does not get damaged. A competent professional may even be able to help you package your chandelier properly and find a means for moving it so that it gets to its new home safely.
Preparing to Take Down Your Chandelier
You want to replace your chandelier or have decided to move and are taking a chandelier with you. This may seem like a large undertaking. A light fixture such as a chandelier is something that you, as a homeowner, may elect to take with you when you move to a new home. Depending on the size and style of the chandelier, this can feel like an insurmountable task. International Chandeliers are here to help. With many years of experience moving all kinds of chandeliers – from the heaviest, to the most awkward – there is no chandelier that we cannot safely and securely remove, and pack away & store for you if necessary.
Before you remove the chandelier from your ceiling, you need to have a place to put it. Chandeliers can be delicate, and as such, they should be packed with extreme care. At International Chandeliers, we can do this for you. We will make sure to use plenty of protective wrap such as bubble wrap for wrapping all of the components. Some pieces will be large, and some smaller pieces may be able to be wrapped individually.
You will need to have a strong box large enough for your chandelier. Some well-prepared homeowners save the boxes where their chandelier was originally packed. If you don’t have a box, we can provide a suitable container. We will measure your chandelier and use a box that is slightly bigger. This is to allow room for the protective bubble wrapping. The bottom should be reinforced so it can handle the weight of the light fixture. You can also pack your chandelier in a wooden crate. This option can be slightly stronger than a cardboard box. It all depends on the size of your chandelier and your method of moving it. If you are shipping it, for example, a crate may be a stronger, more protective option.
Removing Your Chandelier
When removing your chandelier, we will ensure to do it as safely as possible. Here is the process that we will undertake when taking down your fitting:
Check the circuit breaker panel – Double-check that the power to your light is turned off.
Remove the protective shield – There is a protective shield, sometimes disguised as a decorative panel, where the chandelier meets the ceiling. Sometimes there is a decorative ball at the bottom that you can twist and remove.
Remove the screws – Unscrew the screws holding the panel to the ceiling. This will put the weight of your light fixture only on the wires providing power. If your chandelier is quite heavy, this may be a two-person job.
Test the power – Using a voltage detector, check that there is no power to the wires before we start disconnecting them. This prevents surges or electrocution.
Disconnect the wires – Unscrew the protective nut from the end of each wire and then untwist the wire connection, successfully disconnecting them.
Disconnect the grounding wire – The grounding wire might be identified by a green protective shield, or it may be a bare copper wire. We will make sure this is disconnected.
Once all of these steps are completed, we should be able to carefully lower the light fixture to the ground to prepare it for packaging.
